Fat Transfer

This procedure is frequently used in combination with other operations, including face lift, eyelid lift, and breast augmentation, amongst others. A fat transfer can be used for facial rejuvenation to replenish lost volume in the face. Considered a more natural alternative to injectables, fat transfer can target deep wrinkles, nasolabila folds, hollowed cheeks or temples. Some women may choose fat transfer as a method of breast augmentation. Offered as an alternative to breast implants, fat transfer can deliver exceptionally natural results.

In many cases, a percentage of the transferred fat will be absorbed by the body, so the final results will not be visible for 3-4 months. Fat absorption varies from 10-40%, depending on the target site.

Fat is typically harvested using a specialized liposuction-like technique. Small incisions are made in the donor area, and a thin tube (cannula) is used to suction out small amounts of fat. The procedure is usually performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the amount of fat needed. The fat is collected in a sterile basket, where it is washed to remove excess blood and fragmented cells. It is then centrifuged to remove additional water, and to condense the fat cells, preparing them for transfer.

Common donor sites include the abdomen, thighs, and flanks (love handles). The choice of donor site may depend on factors such as the patients body composition and the surgeons preference.

After harvesting, the fat is processed to separate viable fat cells from blood and other fluids. This is typically done using special equipment like a centrifuge or by washing the fat with sterile saline solution. The goal is to isolate the most viable fat cells for transfer.

Recovery time varies depending on the extent of the procedure. Most patients can return to normal activities within 1-2 weeks. Swelling and bruising are common in the first few weeks, and it may take up to six months to see the full results.

Not all fat cells survive the process of harvesting and transfer. Typically, 50-60% of cells will survive, and become viable in their new location. Final results are visible at 12 weeks post surgery.

Potential risks include infection, asymmetry, fat reabsorption, and changes in sensation at the donor or recipient sites. In rare cases, fat cells may not adhere properly to their new location. The complication rate is generally low, especially when performed by an experienced surgeon.
