Facelift

As we age, our skin loses elasticity, facial muscles weaken, and gravity takes its toll, often leading to sagging skin, excess skin, deep facial wrinkles, and jowling. A facelift can restore a more youthful, refreshed look by tightening facial skin.

At Pacific Plastic Surgery in Vancouver, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Demianczuk offers advanced facelift techniques tailored to each patient’s unique anatomy and goals with a deep plane facelift or a SMAS facelift. With over 20 years of experience in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, Dr. Demianczuk is recognized for his commitment to achieving natural-looking results with precision and care.

Facelift Surgeon in Vancouver

A facelift (rhytidectomy) is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess sagging skin, reposition underlying facial tissues, and restore youthful facial contours. This procedure addresses common signs of aging, such as:

  • Loose skin on the face
  • Droopy jowls
  • Deep creases around the nose and mouth

Incision Placement & Scarring

During facial cosmetic surgery, Dr. Demianczuk carefully places incisions around the natural curves of the ear and along the hairline to ensure minimal visible scarring. Scars typically fade over time and are well-hidden, allowing patients to enjoy a rejuvenated appearance without obvious signs of surgery.

Facelift Techniques Offered

Every face is unique, and so is every facelift. Dr. Demianczuk offers multiple facelift surgery techniques to ensure the best results for each patient:

SMAS Facelift: The Gold Standard

The SMAS facelift is widely regarded as the gold standard in facial rejuvenation. This technique addresses both the skin and the underlying superficial musculo-aponeurotic system (SMAS), a key structure responsible for facial expression. During surgery:

  • An incision is made from the temple, along the hairline, and around the ear.
  • The skin is lifted, and the SMAS layer is tightened and repositioned.
  • This deep-layer work produces results that are more dramatic, natural-looking, and longer-lasting compared to skin-only facelifts.

Mini Facelift

Ideal for younger patients or those with early signs of aging, the mini facelift is a less invasive procedure with smaller incisions and reduced recovery time. It targets the lower face and jawline, and often includes fat grafting to restore lost volume and enhance facial contours.

Deep Plane Facelift

A deep plane facelift is an advanced surgical procedure that lifts and repositions the deeper facial tissues-including muscles and fat-rather than just tightening the skin. By releasing and elevating these deeper structures, especially the SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System) layer, this technique restores youthful contours to the cheeks, jawline, and neck, delivering natural-looking and long-lasting results without the tight or “pulled” appearance of traditional facelifts. The incisions are typically hidden along the hairline and around the ears, and the approach minimizes tension on the skin, resulting in finer scars and a smoother recovery.

Candidates for a Facelift

Ideal candidates for a facelift are individuals who are in good overall health and are beginning to experience visible signs of aging, such as sagging skin, excess fat, and lack of facial definition. If you’re considering facial plastic surgery to restore a youthful appearance, this procedure may be right for you.

It’s important for candidates to have realistic expectations and understand the risks, which may include temporary swelling, bruising, or, in rare cases, nerve injury. However, when performed by a skilled plastic surgeon, negative effects are rare.

During your consultation, Dr. Demianczuk will assess your facial anatomy, skin elasticity, and cosmetic goals to determine if a full facelift, mini facelift, SMAS facelift, or deep plane facelift would provide the best results. His goal is always to deliver natural, long-lasting rejuvenation while preserving facial harmony and minimizing risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is best age for facelift?

The common age range for patients who undergo a facelift is 50-70, however younger patients aged 40-50 years can still benefit from mini facelift procedures. As the patient ages, volume loss can occur in the face, so additional fat grafting is frequently performed in addition to skin tightening to create a fuller, more youthful appearance. In patients under 40, non-surgical techniques are usually recommended.

Is there a non-surgical option?

BOTOX, injectable fillers, microdermabrasion, and chemical peels are examples of some non-surgical procedures that can assist in smoothing out wrinkles, improving fine lines and adding facial volume. These procedures also help to even out skin tone. However, these are treatments that will only affect the skin’s surface. Patients with loose skin, drooping jowls or a sagging neck will need to consider surgery if they want these features improved.

Will I look unnatural or fake?

No. Dr Demianczuk will make every effort to work within the confines of the patient’s bone, skin and muscle structures to achieve a younger, more natural look.

Can a facelift or neck lift be combined with other facial procedures?

Yes, a facelift or neck lift is often combined with other facial procedures to achieve more comprehensive and balanced rejuvenation. One common combination is a brow lift, which addresses sagging in the upper face and forehead. Patients may also choose to enhance their results by incorporating procedures that target a double chin or stubborn fat beneath the jawline. Additionally, patients with severely lax neck skin may benefit from incorporating advanced neck skin tightening techniques alongside their lift for a smoother, firmer neckline.

How long does a face lift procedure typically take?

A facelift surgery usually takes between 3 to 5 hours to complete, depending on the extent of the procedure and whether its combined with other treatments. In facelift/necklift procedures, fat can be added to the face through fat grafting or can be removed with liposuction. In some instances, an incision is made under the chin to remove fat, and tighten the neck muscles.

What is the average recovery time after a facelift?

Most patients can return to daily activities and work within 2 weeks after surgery. However, full recovery, including the subsiding of residual swelling, can take several months.

Will there be visible scars after a facelift?

Incisions are typically made in inconspicuous areas such as behind the hairline, around the ear, and sometimes under the chin. While there will be scars, they are usually well-concealed and fade over time. Dr. Demianczuk utilizes post-operative laser therapy to reduce the appearance of surgical scars. These laser treatments begin 6-12 weeks after surgery, and typically 3-4 treatments are required.

What type of anesthesia is used for a facelift?

Facelift surgeries are usually performed under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation with local anesthesia. The procedure is done in an accredited operating room under the care of a Board Certified Anesthesiologist.

When will I see the final results of my facelift?

While improvements are noticeable within weeks, the final results of a facelift may not be fully apparent for several months as swelling subsides and tissues settle

Can a facelift be combined with other facial procedures?

Yes, a facelift is often combined with other facial procedures such as a neck lift or eyelid surgery to achieve more comprehensive and balanced rejuvenation.
