Breast Implant Revision in Vancouver

Breast revision surgery is performed to replace, remove, or correct an existing implant. Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures, and while the majority of women are pleased with their results, some will make the decision to have their implants removed, replaced, or revised.

Indications for revision surgery may include: implant rupture, implant displacement, implant rippling, capsule contraction, “double bubble”, or a desire to change breast size. Some women are concerned about Breast Implant Associated Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). BIA-ALCL is a type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (cancer of the immune system) that can occur in the scar tissue and fluid near the implant. It is not breast cancer. It has been closely linked with use of textured implants. Although Health Canada and the FDA does not currently recommend prophylactic removal of textured breast implants in asymptomatic women, some women choose to have an enbloc resection for peace of mind. Dr Demianczuk can perform this procedure following a discussion of its risks and benefits.

Dr. Demianczuk of Pacific Plastic Surgery is one of the best rated breast augmentation surgeon in Vancouver with over 20 years of clinical experience in cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. Personalized, high quality care are the founding principles of Dr. Demianczuk’s practice. Our team is dedicated in helping you realize your aesthetic goals.

The Surgical Experience

Breast revision surgery is performed under general anaesthesia as an outpatient procedure in an accredited surgical facility. The ease of recovery will depend on exactly what was being done during the revision process. Most women are able to resume their normal work activities after one week of rest. Exercise will be a gradual process. It may take up to a full year for the scars to begin to fade and for the newly revised breast or chest area to look and feel natural.

Cost

The final cost will depend on numerous factors including:

  • If the breast implants are being removed or replaced
  • If breast replacement is occurring with a silicone or saline breast implant
  • If any additional surgical technique will be needed (i.e. a capsulectomy or a breast lift)
  • If the implants were covered by a manufacturer warranty
  • If the procedure is performed under general anaesthesia, or local anaesthesia

What Is Breast Implant Revision?

Breast implant revision is a customized procedure tailored to address changes in a patient’s breasts following an initial augmentation. This may include replacing implants that have shifted, correcting capsular contracture, addressing implant rupture, or changing implant size, shape, or material. Dr. Demianczuk carefully evaluates each patient’s needs and creates a surgical plan that may involve implant replacement, implant removal, or combining revision with additional lifting or reshaping techniques for the most natural results.

Who Can Benefit from Breast Implant Revision?

Ideal candidates for breast implant revision are women who are dissatisfied with the appearance or feel of their current implants, have experienced complications, or want to update their implants for personal or aesthetic reasons. Common concerns include rippling, asymmetry, changes after pregnancy or weight fluctuations, or a desire for a different size. Candidates should be in good overall health, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations about the procedure results.

What Can Be Combined with Breast Implant Revision?

Breast implant revision is often combined with other breast or body procedures to achieve comprehensive results. A breast lift may be performed simultaneously to restore a more youthful breast position, especially if skin laxity is present. Some patients also choose to combine revision with body contouring procedures such as liposuction or a tummy tuck to enhance overall body proportions.

What to Expect During Surgery and Recovery

Breast implant revision is typically performed under general anesthesia and varies in duration depending on the complexity of the case. Dr. Demianczuk uses precise surgical techniques to minimize scarring and ensure natural results. Patients can expect some swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort in the days following surgery, which will improve gradually. Most women return to light activities within a week, with more strenuous activities delayed for several weeks.

Breast Implant Revision Results

Results from breast implant revision are visible as swelling subsides and the breasts settle into their new shape and position. Patients often notice improved symmetry, a more youthful contour, and more comfort with their updated implants. With proper care and follow-up appointments, results can be long-lasting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is breast implant revision surgery?

Breast implant revision surgery is designed to remove, replace, improve the appearance of, or correct problems associated with breast implants. Breast implant revision is typically more complex than initial breast implant surgery.

When should one consider breast implant revision?

Patients should seek breast implant revision when they are experiencing complications relating to their breast implants. Complications can include implant rupture, pain, poor implant placement, breast asymmetry, dissatisfaction with implant shape or size, and changes in aesthetic desires.

What does breast implant revision involve?

In most cases, breast implant revision involves swapping out old implants for new ones, whether it be for a new size, material, or shape or because the previous implant is damaged. Breast implant revision can also involve removing scar tissue, adjusting the skin envelope of the breast, repositioning the implants, and occasionally lifting the breast. In some cases, an internal bra is used to support the breast implant and create a longer lasting result.

How long is the recovery for breast implant revision?

The recovery timeline for breast implant revision is similar to that of an initial breast augmentation with implants. The initial recovery process lasts about two weeks before you are able to begin resuming your daily activities. A full recovery is usually made in about 6-12 weeks, depending on the complexity of the surgery.

What are the risks of breast implant revision?

The most common risks of breast implant revision include scarring, loss of sensation, asymmetry,  and infection. Other risks can include capsular constriction, implant rupture, or bleeding. The specific risks are dependent on the exact procedure performed, and the general health of the patient undergoing breast implant revision surgery.
