Dermatology Procedures

Due to the numerous types, variations, and complexities of lesions that can present on the skin, obtaining an assessment by a dermatologist is crucial for accurate diagnosis and determining the most effective treatment method. After a thorough discussion of your medical history and the history of your skin growth, the dermatologist will work with you to create a personalized treatment plan that is safe, effective, and tailored to meet your specific goals.

Common Dermatologic Conditions and Lesions

Some of the most common benign skin lesions include cysts, moles, skin tags, lipomas, seborrheic keratoses, cherry angiomas, and sebaceous hyperplasia. These growths are generally harmless but can become bothersome due to their appearance or irritation. Depending on the nature of the lesion, removal may be recommended for cosmetic reasons or to prevent recurring trauma and infection.

Cysts are non-cancerous, sac-like bumps beneath the skin that can contain fluid, keratin, or other material, most commonly appearing on the scalp, face, neck, or back. While typically painless and slow growing, they can become inflamed or infected, causing discomfort and swelling. If a cyst becomes bothersome, painful, or increases in size, it can be safely removed in-office under local anesthesia through a minor surgical procedure to prevent recurrence.

Moles are common skin growths composed of pigmented cells that can vary in size, color, and shape, and typically appear on any part of the body. Although most are benign, changes in a mole’s appearance, such as rapid growth, asymmetry, or color variation, should be evaluated by a dermatologist. Moles can be removed for both medical and cosmetic reasons through a minimally invasive procedure performed in-office by Dr. Arko Demianczuk.

These are small growths that typically are found in areas of friction where clothing often rubs, such as the neck, chest, underarms, back, and groin, but can also be found under the lower eyelids. They can be bothersome as they can catch on clothing or jewelry, and this trauma can sometimes cause the area to bleed and make it more prone to infections.

A lipoma is a non-cancerous, slow-growing lump made up of fat cells and is one of the most common benign growths in the skin. People of any age can develop them, but they often become most apparent between the ages of 40 and 60. Lipomas are located deep under the skin’s surface and are soft to the touch, moving easily when prodded with a finger, and typically cause no discomfort.

Seborrheic keratoses are non-cancerous, wart-like growths that appear to be “stuck on” the skin. They range in color from light tan to black and are often found on the face, chest, back, or shoulders. Although harmless, they can resemble skin cancers, so it is essential to have them evaluated by a dermatologist. Many patients choose to have seborrheic keratoses removed if they become irritated or for cosmetic reasons.

Cherry angiomas are small, bright red skin growths made up of blood vessels. They are commonly seen in adults over 30 and may increase in number with age. Though harmless, they can bleed if scratched or injured. These lesions are often removed with laser therapy or electrocautery for cosmetic purposes or if frequently irritated.

Sebaceous hyperplasia appears as small, yellowish bumps caused by enlarged oil glands, commonly seen on the forehead and cheeks. While not dangerous, they can resemble basal cell carcinomas and should be evaluated for further assessment. Treatment options may include cryotherapy, laser therapy, or minor excision to improve appearance and reduce recurrence.

What to Expect from Treatment and Recovery

Most dermatologic procedures for benign growths are quick, performed in-office, and require only local anesthesia. Treatments may involve excision, cryotherapy, electrosurgery, or laser-based removal, depending on the type of lesion and your skin’s characteristics. Downtime is minimal, with mild redness or scabbing common in the days following the procedure. Dr. Demianczuk provides personalized aftercare instructions to ensure optimal healing and achieve the best aesthetic results.
